Your Five Amazing Senses
Your senses help you understand everything around you! You use them
to see beautiful colours, hear your favourite songs, smell yummy food,
taste delicious treats, and feel a warm hug. 🤗
All five senses send messages to your brain — and your brain
figures out what is happening! Let's meet each sense. 🧠
Sight — Your Eyes
Your eyes let you see the world! They take in light and send
pictures to your brain. 📸
🌈 Your eyes can see millions of colours — red, blue, green, and
so many more!
🌙 In the dark, the black circle in your eye (called the pupil)
gets bigger to let in more light.
☀️ In bright light, your pupil gets smaller to protect your eyes.
Fun fact: You blink about 15 times every minute
— that keeps your eyes clean and wet! 💧
Sight is the most important sense for humans. And it is the most developed sense in humans.
Blind people use their other senses to navigate the world.
Sight helps us detect danger.
Hearing — Your Ears
Your ears let you hear all the sounds around you — music, birds
singing, your friends laughing, and even a whisper! 🎵
🔊 Sounds travel through the air as invisible waves.
👂 Your ear catches these waves and sends them deep inside to a tiny part called
the eardrum.
🧠 The eardrum shakes, and your brain turns those shakes into sounds you understand!
Fun fact: Your ears also help you keep your balance
— that's how you can stand on one foot! 🦩
Hearing is the second most important sense for humans. And it is the second most developed sense in humans.
Deaf people use their other senses to navigate the world.
Hearing helps us detect danger.
Smell — Your Nose
Your nose helps you smell all kinds of things — flowers, cookies
baking, rain, and even stinky socks! 🧦
🌸 When you breathe in, tiny bits from things around you float into your nose.
📬 Special helpers inside your nose send messages to your brain saying
"Mmm, that smells good!" or "Yuck, stay away!" 🚫
Fun fact: Smells can bring back memories! When you smell something
from long ago, it can remind you of a special moment. 🎂✨
Smell is the third most important sense for humans. And it is the third most developed sense in humans.
Smell helps us detect danger.
Taste — Your Tongue
Your tongue is covered with tiny bumps called taste buds.
They help you taste your food! 🍕
🍬 Sweet — like chocolate and strawberries!
🍋 Sour — like lemons! Pucker up!
🧂 Salty — like chips and popcorn!
🥦 Bitter — like some vegetables (but they're good for you!).
Fun fact: Your tongue and nose work together! When your nose is
blocked, food doesn't taste as yummy. Try it! 👃🚫
Taste is the fourth most important sense for humans. And it is the fourth most developed sense in humans.
Taste helps us detect poison and spoiled food that can make us sick.
Touch — Your Skin
Your skin is your biggest sense organ — it covers your whole body!
It helps you feel everything you touch. 🤲
🧸 Soft — like a fluffy teddy bear!
🪨 Hard — like a rock!
🔥 Hot — like a warm cup of cocoa! ☕
🧊 Cold — like an ice cube!
Fun fact: Your fingertips are super sensitive —
they can feel the tiniest bumps! That's why you can read Braille with your fingers. 🤏
Touch is the fifth most important sense for humans. And it is the fifth most developed sense in humans.
Touch helps us detect danger through pain and temperature.
Did you know that taste and smell work as a team? 🤝 When you have a blocked nose, food seems to have no flavour! That's because your nose helps your tongue taste things. Try eating something while holding your nose — can you taste it? 👃🚫🍎
