What is the Solar System?
Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what's really
out there? ๐ Those tiny twinkling dots are actually giant
stars โ some even bigger than our Sun โ just very, very
far away!
Our Solar System is like a giant space family โ the
Sun is the parent in the middle, and the planets, moons, comets and
asteroids all orbit around it, held in place by the Sun's invisible
pulling force called gravity. ๐๐ชโ๏ธ
Everything in space is mind-blowingly enormous! Let's
explore our cosmic neighbourhood together! ๐โจ
The Sun โ Our Giant Star!
The Sun is a massive ball of burning hot gas right
at the centre of our Solar System. It's so big you could fit
1 million Earths inside it! โ๏ธ The Sun gives us
the light and warmth that makes all life on Earth possible.
๐ก๏ธ The Sun's surface is about 5,500ยฐC โ hot
enough to melt any metal instantly!
๐ฑ Plants use sunlight to make their food through
photosynthesis โ and then we eat the plants! We all live on
solar energy!
๐ The Sun's heat powers our weather and ocean
currents โ it runs the whole climate system!
Fun fact: Sunlight takes 8 minutes and
20 seconds to travel from the Sun to Earth!
So when you feel sunshine on your face, those rays left the
Sun 8 minutes ago! โฑ๏ธ๐
The 8 Planets โ Our Solar Family!
Eight planets travel around the Sun in oval paths called
orbits. In order from closest to farthest,
they are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus and Neptune! ๐
๐ด The first 4 planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars) are small and rocky โ like giant balls of rock and metal!
๐ The last 4 planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune) are huge gas and ice giants โ with no solid ground to
stand on!
๐ง Pluto used to be called a planet but is now
called a "dwarf planet" โ it's tiny and very far away!
Fun fact: A clever way to remember the planets in
order is: "My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us
Nachos!" ๐ฎ Each first letter matches a planet!
Moons โ Planets Have Their Own Sidekicks!
Just like planets orbit the Sun, moons orbit planets!
They are called natural satellites. Our Earth has
just one Moon โ and it's the one you see glowing
in the night sky! ๐
๐ Our Moon is about 384,000 km from Earth โ that's
about 30 Earths lined up in a row!
๐ช Saturn has over 140 moons โ
way more than any other planet!
๐ Our Moon has no air, no weather and is covered in craters
from space rocks that crashed into it long ago!
Fun fact: In 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong became
the first human to walk on the Moon! He said it
felt like walking on soft sand. ๐จโ๐๐ฃ
Comets & Asteroids โ Space Rocks!
The Solar System has lots of other objects flying around too!
They may look small in the night sky, but up close they are
enormous! ๐
โ๏ธ Comets are giant balls of ice and dust.
As they fly close to the Sun, the ice melts and creates a
glowing tail of light millions of kilometres
long โ like a cosmic firework!
๐ชจ Asteroids are rocky chunks, mostly found
in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter โ
like a ring of space rocks around the Solar System!
๐ Shooting stars are actually tiny space rocks
burning up as they fall through Earth's atmosphere!
Fun fact: Scientists think a giant asteroid
crash 65 million years ago helped cause
the dinosaurs to go extinct! ๐ฆ๐ฅ
If you could travel at the speed of a jet aeroplane (about 900 km per hour), it would take you 19 years just to reach the Sun! ๐ซ And the nearest star after our Sun โ called Proxima Centauri โ is so far away it would take that same jet 5 million years to get there! ๐ Space is so unimaginably vast that even our entire Solar System is like a tiny dot compared to the rest of the universe. We live in an incredibly huge and amazing place! ๐๐
