The Animal Kingdom
There are millions of different kinds of animals on Earth! π
Some are big like elephants π, and some are tiny like ants π.
Some live in the sea, some fly in the sky, and some live on land.
Scientists put animals into groups based on what they look like
and how they live. Let's explore the most amazing groups! π
Mammals
Mammals are animals that have fur or hair and feed their
babies milk β just like your mum fed you when you were a baby! πΌ
πΆ Dogs, cats, and horses are mammals!
π¬ Even dolphins and whales are mammals β they breathe air, not water!
π¦ Bats are mammals too β the only ones that can fly!
Fun fact: YOU are a mammal! You have hair, you're warm,
and you were fed milk as a baby.
Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates characterized by the presence of mammary
glands, which in females produce milk for nourishing the young.
Birds
Birds have feathers and wings, and most of them can fly! ποΈ
They lay eggs and keep them warm until the babies hatch. π₯
π¦
Eagles can see super far β much better than humans!
π§ Penguins are birds that can't fly β but they're amazing swimmers! π
π¦ Parrots can learn to copy what you say! "Hello!" π
Fun fact: The hummingbird is the smallest bird
in the world β it's tinier than your hand! π€
Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates characterized by the presence of feathers,
wings, and a beak, and most are capable of flight.
Fish
Fish live in water β in rivers, lakes, and oceans! π
They breathe using special parts called gills (not lungs
like us!). They have fins to swim and scales to protect their bodies.
π‘ Pufferfish can blow up like a balloon when they're scared!
π¦ Sharks have been around longer than dinosaurs!
π Clownfish live inside sea plants called anemones β like Nemo! π¬
Fun fact: Some fish can glow in the dark deep
down in the ocean! π‘π
Fish are aquatic vertebrates that have gills for breathing, fins for movement,
and scales for protection.
Reptiles & Amphibians
Reptiles have dry, scaly skin β like lizards π¦, snakes π,
turtles π’, and crocodiles π! They lay eggs and love to warm up in the sun. βοΈ
Amphibians like frogs πΈ and salamanders can live in water
AND on land! Frogs start life as tiny tadpoles swimming in
ponds, and then they grow legs and hop onto land! πΈβ‘οΈπ¦΅
Fun fact: Chameleons can change their skin colour
to match what's around them β like a magic trick! π¨β¨
Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates characterized by the presence of scales,
and most lay eggs on land. Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates that can
live both in water and on land, and they typically undergo metamorphosis from
an aquatic larval stage to a terrestrial adult stage.
Insects & Bugs
Insects are the biggest group of animals on Earth! They all
have 6 legs and many have wings. πͺ°
π Bees make honey and help flowers grow!
π¦ Butterflies start as caterpillars and then grow beautiful wings!
π Ants work in big teams β they can carry things much heavier than themselves!
π Ladybirds are tiny but they help farmers by eating plant pests!
Fun fact: There are more insects on Earth than any
other kind of animal! ππππ
Insects are invertebrates characterized by the presence of six legs, a three-part
body (head, thorax, and abdomen), and usually one or two pairs of wings.
Did you know that for every ONE person on Earth, there are about 1 billion insects? π Insects may be tiny, but they do HUGE jobs β bees help flowers grow, worms make the soil healthy, and ladybirds protect plants. Tiny but mighty! πͺ
