Chapter 05

Wild Weather 🌦️

Rain, sunshine, snow, and storms β€” weather is happening all around us every single day! Let's find out what makes the weather change and why it's so amazing. β˜€οΈπŸŒ§οΈβ„οΈ

🌦️ Let's Discover

What is Weather?

Weather is what is happening outside right now β€” is it sunny? Rainy? Windy? Snowy? ❄️ Weather changes every day and sometimes even every hour!

The Sun is the big boss of weather! It heats up the air, the water, and the land β€” and that's what makes all the different kinds of weather happen. Let's explore! 🌞 The water cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. The sun's energy drives the water cycle, causing water to evaporate from the Earth's surface and condense into clouds. When the clouds become saturated with water, precipitation occurs in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. The water then collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the cycle begins again.

☁️

Clouds & Rain

Clouds are made of tiny water drops floating in the sky! ☁️ Here's how they form:

β˜€οΈ The Sun heats up water in rivers, lakes, and oceans.
πŸ’¨ The water turns into invisible gas and floats up into the sky.
☁️ High up where it's cold, the gas turns back into tiny water drops β€” and that makes a cloud!
🌧️ When the drops get too heavy, they fall down as rain!

Fun fact: A big rain cloud can hold millions of litres of water! That's heavier than 100 elephants! 🐘🐘🐘 Rain is very important for plants and animals. It helps them grow and stay alive. Raindrops are not teardrops! They are tiny drops of water that have come together in the clouds.

🌊

The Water-Go-Round!

Water goes on a never-ending journey called the water cycle! πŸ”„

1️⃣ The Sun heats water and it goes up into the sky as gas. β˜€οΈβ¬†οΈ
2️⃣ Up in the sky it gets cold, and the gas turns into clouds. ☁️
3️⃣ The clouds get heavy and the water falls back down as rain or snow. πŸŒ§οΈβ„οΈ
4️⃣ The water flows into rivers, lakes, and oceans β€” and it starts again! 🌊

Fun fact: The water you drink today is the SAME water that dinosaurs drank millions of years ago! πŸ¦•πŸ’§ The water cycle is a natural process that helps to distribute water around the Earth. It is a continuous process that takes place over a period of time. So next time you see rain, remember that it's just water taking a trip! πŸ’§

πŸ’¨

What is Wind?

Wind is just air that is moving! 🌬️ But why does it move?

β˜€οΈ The Sun heats up some parts of the Earth more than others.
⬆️ Warm air is light, so it floats up.
➑️ Cool air rushes in to take its place β€” and that moving air is what we call wind! πŸ’¨

A gentle wind is called a breeze πŸƒ β€” it feels nice on a hot day! But a very strong wind is a storm β›ˆοΈ β€” it can blow trees and even knock things over!

Fun fact: Wind can be so strong that it pushes huge sailing ships across the ocean! β›΅ Wind is all around us, even when we can't see it. It can be gentle and refreshing, or it can be strong and powerful. Wind is used to generate electricity in wind turbines. Wind can also be used to fly kites and balloons.

β›ˆοΈ

Thunder & Lightning!

Storms can be loud and exciting! ⚑

⚑ Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky! It happens when clouds get so charged up that they zap a huge bolt of light β€” FLASH! πŸ’₯
πŸ₯ Thunder is the loud BOOM sound that happens after lightning. The lightning heats the air so fast it makes a big bang!
πŸ‘€ You see lightning FIRST and hear thunder AFTER β€” that's because light is faster than sound! πŸƒπŸ’¨

Fun fact: Lightning is 5 times hotter than the surface of the Sun! β˜€οΈπŸ”₯ Stay safe indoors during storms! Lightning is a natural phenomenon that occurs during thunderstorms. It is a powerful discharge of electricity that can travel through the air and strike the ground.

πŸ‚

The Four Seasons

The weather changes throughout the year because of the four seasons! πŸ—“οΈ

🌸 Spring β€” flowers bloom, baby animals are born, and it's warm and rainy!
β˜€οΈ Summer β€” it's hot and sunny β€” time for ice cream and swimming! 🍦🏊
πŸ‚ Autumn β€” leaves change colour and fall from the trees!
❄️ Winter β€” it's cold and snowy β€” time for snowmen! β›„

Fun fact: When it's summer where you live, it's winter on the other side of the world! 🌍 The four seasons are caused by the Earth's tilt on its axis as it revolves around the Sun. These Seasons are important for the growth of plants and animals. Each season has its own unique characteristics and beauty. Different plants and animals are adapted to different seasons. For example, some animals hibernate during the winter to conserve energy. Others migrate to warmer climates. Plants also adapt to the seasons by shedding their leaves in the fall and growing new ones in the spring.

πŸ’
Think About It!

The water you drink today has been around for billions of years! It's been in clouds, rivers, oceans, and rain drops over and over again. The same water keeps going around and around β€” it's never lost, it just keeps travelling! πŸ’§πŸ”„ Maybe a dinosaur once drank the same water! πŸ¦•

🌑️

Hot or Cold?

We use a thermometer 🌑️ to find out how hot or cold it is outside. When the number is high, it's hot β€” time for shorts and a t-shirt! 🩳 When the number is low, it's cold β€” put on your coat and gloves! 🧀 The hottest place on Earth is so hot you could fry an egg on the ground! 🍳 The coldest place is so cold that even your breath freezes instantly! Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is. It is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. A thermometer is used to measure temperature. The higher the temperature, the hotter it is. The lower the temperature, the colder it is.

☁️

Cloud Shapes

Did you know clouds have different shapes, and each shape tells you something about the weather? β˜οΈπŸ”
πŸ‘ Fluffy clouds look like cotton balls or sheep β€” they mean it's a nice day!
🌧️ Big dark clouds are full of water β€” rain is coming!
πŸ“ Flat grey clouds cover the whole sky β€” it might drizzle.
πŸͺΆ Thin wispy clouds are very high up and look like feathers! Clouds are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere. They form when water vapor in the air cools and condenses around tiny particles such as dust or salt. Clouds play an important role in the Earth's climate system by reflecting sunlight back into space and trapping heat near the surface. Different types of clouds have different shapes and sizes, and they can be used to predict the weather.

🌈

Rainbow Magic!

A rainbow appears when the Sun shines through raindrops! πŸŒˆβ˜€οΈ The raindrops act like tiny mirrors and split the sunlight into 7 beautiful colours:
πŸ”΄ Red Β· 🟠 Orange Β· 🟑 Yellow Β· 🟒 Green Β· πŸ”΅ Blue Β· 🟣 Indigo Β· πŸ’œ Violet

To see a rainbow, the Sun must be behind you and the rain must be in front of you. Next time it rains while the Sun is shining, look for one! πŸ‘€βœ¨ Rainbows are optical phenomena that are caused by the reflection, refraction, and dispersion of light in water droplets. They are most commonly seen during or after rainfall when the sun is shining. Rainbows can also be seen in waterfalls, mist, and spray. The colors of the rainbow are always in the same order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This is because each color has a different wavelength, and the different wavelengths are bent at different angles when they pass through the water droplets.

❄️

Snow & Ice

When it's very cold high up in the clouds, water doesn't turn into rain β€” it turns into snow! ❄️ Snow is made of tiny ice crystals that are so delicate and beautiful. Every single snowflake has 6 sides, and no two snowflakes are exactly the same! πŸ”¬βœ¨ When LOTS of snow falls at once with strong wind, it's called a blizzard β€” brrr! πŸ₯ΆπŸŒ¨οΈ Snowflakes are formed when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. These crystals then fall to the ground as snow. Snowflakes can be different shapes and sizes, but they all have 6 sides. Snowflakes are made of water, but they are not wet. This is because the ice crystals are so small that they do not melt when they touch your skin.

πŸŒͺ️

Super Storms!

Sometimes weather gets REALLY wild! πŸŒͺ️
πŸŒͺ️ A tornado is a spinning funnel of wind that touches the ground β€” it can spin faster than a race car! πŸŽοΈπŸ’¨
πŸŒ€ A hurricane is a HUGE spinning storm that forms over warm ocean water. It can be as wide as a whole country!

Scientists called weather forecasters watch the sky and use special tools to warn people when big storms are coming β€” so everyone can stay safe! πŸ›‘οΈπŸ“‘ Tornadoes and hurricanes are both types of severe storms that can cause a lot of damage. Tornadoes are rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. Hurricanes are large, rotating storms that form over warm ocean water. Both tornadoes and hurricanes can cause high winds, heavy rain, and flooding. It is important to stay safe during these storms by following the instructions of emergency officials.

🀯 WOW! Lightning strikes the Earth about 100 times every single second! ⚑ That's about 8 million lightning bolts every day! And each bolt is hotter than the surface of the Sun! Good thing most lightning happens high up in the clouds where it can't hurt us. Stay inside during storms to be safe! πŸ β›ˆοΈ Lightning is a natural electrical discharge that occurs during thunderstorms. It is caused by the buildup of static electricity in the atmosphere. Lightning can be dangerous, but it is also a beautiful and fascinating phenomenon.
