What is a Magnet?
A magnet is a special object that can pull certain things
toward it β without even touching them! This invisible pulling
force is called magnetism.
Magnets can stick to your fridge, pick up paper clips, and even help
you find your way! Let's learn all about these amazing things. π§²β¨
Magnets are objects that produce a magnetic field, which is an invisible force that can attract or repel
certain materials.
What Sticks to a Magnet?
Magnets don't stick to everything β only to things made of certain
metals! π©
β
YES! β paper clips, iron nails, coins (some), keys,
fridge doors, and metal spoons!
β NO! β wood, plastic, glass, rubber, paper, and fabric!
Try it at home! Walk around with a magnet and see what sticks and
what doesn't. It's like a scavenger hunt! π
Fun fact: Magnets love iron the most!
Iron is the metal that magnets are strongest with.
Magnets can also attract nickel and cobalt.
Magnets cannot attract aluminum, copper, and gold.
Magnets can attract objects through paper, cardboard, and even water!
North Pole & South Pole
Every magnet has two ends β called the North Pole
and the South Pole. π΅π΄
π€ Opposites attract! β If you put a North near a South,
they SNAP together! Click!
π
Same poles push! β If you put North near North (or South
near South), they push each other away! π¨
Fun fact: Even if you break a magnet in half, each piece
will STILL have a North and a South pole β you can never separate them!
If you break a magnet in half, you get two smaller magnets, each with its own North and South pole.
North pole is usually marked with red color and South pole is usually marked with blue color.
Earth is a Giant Magnet!
Did you know the whole Earth is like one big magnet? ππ§²
π§ Earth has a North Pole and a South Pole β just like a bar magnet!
π‘οΈ Earth's magnetism acts like an invisible shield that
protects us from harmful rays from the Sun!
π¦ Some animals, like birds and sea turtles, can actually feel
Earth's magnetism β it helps them find their way when they travel! πΊοΈ
Fun fact: Without Earth's magnetic shield, life on Earth
might not exist! Thanks, Earth!
The Earth's magnetic field is about 100 times weaker than a fridge magnet.
We can use compass to find the direction of North and South poles.
Magnets Are Everywhere!
You use magnets every day β even if you don't know it!
πͺ Fridge door β magnets keep it closed!
π§ Headphones β tiny magnets inside make the sound!
π§Έ Magnet toys β building blocks that snap together!
π Magnet trains β some trains float above the tracks
using magnets! They go super fast! ππ¨
Fun fact: Doctors use very strong magnets in hospitals
to take pictures of the inside of your body β without cutting you open!
MRI machines use very strong magnets to create detailed images of the inside of your body.
Magnets are used in speakers, microphones, and electric motors.
A compass π§ has a tiny magnet inside that always points North! Sailors and explorers have used compasses for hundreds of years to find their way across oceans and through forests. ππ² The compass works because Earth itself is a giant magnet β and the little magnet inside the compass is pulled toward Earth's North Pole!
