Why Does Our Planet Need Help?
Have you ever seen a plastic bag floating in the sea, or felt a
summer that was hotter than usual?
Our planet Earth is amazing β it has clean air to
breathe, fresh water to drink, and millions of incredible animals and
plants. But people have been making a lot of mess and
pollution for a long time, and the Earth is starting to
struggle.
The good news? We can fix it! Scientists, children,
teachers and families all around the world are working together to
save our planet β and you can help too! Let's find out how. πΏβ¨
Global Warming β Earth is Getting Too Hot!
Imagine wrapping a thick blanket around the whole Earth β that's
what too much carbon dioxide (COβ) does! When we
burn coal, oil and gas for energy, COβ goes into the air and
traps the Sun's heat. The Earth gets warmer and warmer. π₯
π Warmer temperatures melt ice caps, making sea
levels rise and flooding coastal towns!
πͺοΈ It causes stronger storms, longer droughts and
very unusual weather!
π»ββοΈ Animals like polar bears are losing their
homes as Arctic ice disappears!
Fun fact: The last 10 years have been the
10 hottest years ever recorded in history! That
tells us global warming is happening right now. π‘οΈ
Deforestation β Losing Our Forests!
Trees are like the lungs of the Earth β they
breathe in the COβ we don't want and breathe out the oxygen we
need! π¬οΈ But every year, millions of trees are cut down for
wood, farming and building cities.
π¦ Forests are home to 80% of all land animals β
when forests disappear, they lose their homes!
π¨ Fewer trees means more COβ stays in the air,
making global warming worse!
π§οΈ Forests also help bring rain β without them,
land can turn into dry desert!
Fun fact: The Amazon Rainforest in South America
is so large and produces so much oxygen that people call it
the "Lungs of the Planet"! πΏπ
Pollution β Messing Up Our World!
Pollution means putting harmful stuff into the
air, water and land β stuff that doesn't belong there! It hurts
animals, plants and people too.
π¨ Air pollution from cars and factories makes
the air smoky and hard to breathe!
π Plastic in the ocean β over 8 million tonnes
every year β is eaten by fish and sea turtles by mistake!
π¦ Oil spills cover birds' feathers with sticky
oil, stopping them from flying!
Fun fact: A plastic bottle takes up to
450 years to break down in the environment!
That means plastic you throw away today could still be here
when your great-great-great-grandchildren are alive!
Endangered Animals β Don't Let Them Disappear!
Endangered means an animal is in danger of
disappearing from Earth forever β and once it's gone, it's gone
for good! Right now, thousands of species are at risk
because of humans.
πΌ There are only about 1,800 giant pandas left
in the wild β scientists are working hard to save them!
π¦ Lions, elephants and rhinos are all losing
their grassland homes to farms and buildings!
π Even bees are endangered β and without bees,
most of our food plants cannot grow!
Fun fact: Scientists believe up to
1 million species could become extinct in the
next few decades unless we act now. Every animal matters in
the web of life! π
You are never too small to make a difference! π± A girl named Greta Thunberg started caring about the planet when she was just your age. By the time she was 15 she was speaking in front of world leaders, and by 16 the whole world was listening! Scientists, kids, teachers and families everywhere are working together to save Earth. What will YOU do? Even turning off a tap, picking up litter or planting a seed is a powerful start! ππ
